The SPARK Singing Group and Jazz Band are “do re mi fa so” excited for what the two groups hope to be a great show on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold starting on Friday Nov. 7, online at ticketleap.com and at the door for $8 per person.
“The theme of our show this year is light,” says freshman Catherine Cargian of the SPARK group. Spark Instructor Elizabeth Quackenbush was inspired to chose the theme of light because of recent personal experiences. “There needs to be a balance between darkness and light in everyone's lives,” says Mrs. Quackenbush, “and that’s what the kids will be singing about because until you know darkness you can't experience the light.”
Some of the songs Mrs. Quackenbush chose to fit in with the theme of light are: “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” by Fall Out Boy, “Compass” by Lady Antebellum, “Bring Me to Light” from the musical “Violet,” “Be Okay” by Oh Honey, “Speak Life” by Toby Mac, and “Light” from the muscial “Next to Normal.” The girls of SPARK will sing “The Light” by Sara Bareilles and the boys will sing “Seize the Day” from the musical “Newsies.” “There will be a lot of fun choreography to go with the songs and we’re really excited to perform for everyone watching,” says junior Chelsea Colton of Spark.
The Jazz Band (which is a selective instrumental group) and SPARK Group will be performing songs together as well as by themselves. “They will join together to perform eight pieces of music,” says Jazz Band Instructor Daniel Blumenthal. “Some of the instruments being featured in the show are saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, drums, and a few others.” Some of the songs being performed alone instrumentally are “Beginning to see the light” and “Sunny Side.”
The show will be approximately an hour to an hour and a half with two acts with a brief intermission in between. “Last year’s performance went very well and we’re hoping that this year is just as good, if not better,” says senior Tal Frieden of the Jazz Band.
